Honest
Aldred's ArmouryDagger (Cost: 20 oraks)
Daggers come in a wide variety of shapes
and sizes. In general they are bladed weapons of between nine and eighteen
inches in length. They do less damage than most weapons but they are inexpensive
and easy to use. They can also be used as a general purpose tool, for cutting
rope or cloth, carving wood, forcing locks, etc. Daggers are often the
favoured weapons of thieves and halfbreeds. Larger weapons will hinder
any attempts to break into buildings, move quietly, etc.
Short Sword (Cost: 50 oraks)
The short sword is the smallest of the
sword type weapons and requires the least skill to use effectively. They
measure up to two feet in length. Although they do less damage than other
sword types they can be useful in confined spaces, eg underground tunnels.
Temple guards and town militia are often equipped with short swords and
most townsfolk are able to use them should the need arise. Short swords
are most effective against unprotected or lightly armoured foes.
Mace (Cost: 50 oraks)
The mace is one of the most effective
weapons against heavily armoured opponents. Although it does less damage
than some of the heavy weapon types it can be used anywhere and armour
does little to protect an opponent from its crushing blows. A mace is especially
potent in the hands of a skilled character with a high toughness. The mace
is not particularly effective against fast moving or agile opponents and
other weapon types are usually more effective against unarmoured foes.
Short Bow (Cost: 20 oraks)
Short bows are easier to use than other
bows and can be used in many places where a long bow is useless. They can
be used from horseback or in confined spaces but like other missile weapons
they are of little use in a melee. Arrows are easy to make and a character
with a bow is always assumed to keep plenty in reserve. Characters with
high awareness will find that this aids them greatly when using a bow and
as a result elves and halfbreeds are often skilled with this weapon.
Light Crossbow (Cost: 40 oraks)
This weapon is easy to use, compact and
very accurate but more expensive than an ordinary bow and takes longer
to load. The quarrels used with this weapon are easy to make and all characters
with a light crossbow are assumed to carry plenty of spares. The quarrels
are quite light and do less damage than ordinary arrows, especially against
well armoured opponents. The light crossbow is usually favoured by inexperienced
adventurers because it is so easy to use but fighters with more skill will
soon find it better to use other missile weapons.
Sling (Cost: 5 oraks)
Easy to use and very cheap, the sling
is probably one of the oldest forms of missile weapon. It is less effective
than most other missile weapons, especially against armoured opponents,
and can not be used effectively in confined spaces. Ordinary stones can
be used for missiles so characters with this weapon will never run out
of ammunition. The sling is obviously very light and often favoured by
weak characters. This is one of the few weapons which followers of A'stall
can carry without losing favour.
Hand Axe (Cost: 40 oraks)
This short hafted weapon can also be used
as a general purpose tool. It can be used to chop wood, break locks, etc.
They do less damage than most weapons but they are cheap, fairly light,
and easy to use. Dwarves often favour this weapon but other characters
will probably find a dagger better in most situations. Villagers
all over Crasimoff's World will use axes in their daily toils and therefore
have some skill with their use as weapons.
Cloth Armour (Cost: 80 oraks)
This is the lightest armour available
and provides very little protection but it does have its advantages, the
main one being cost. All but the poorest of adventurers can afford it easily.
The armour is also less cumbersome than other kinds. This means less weight
to carry around and also greater freedom of movement, an important factor
for mages, thieves and anyone in a hurry. This armour looks like a thick
quilted tunic which hangs to the knees and has half length sleeves. It
is popular amongst farmers and the inhabitants of most villages.
Leather Armour (Cost: 160 oraks)
Leather armour is usually worn by thieves
but is also popular amongst penniless fighters. Two types of leather are
used - flexible and lightweight where movement is needed (eg arms and upper
legs), and tough, hardened leather everywhere else (eg chest, forearms
and shins). It provides only light protection but is inexpensive, easy
to wear, and does not restrict a character's movements. Leather armour
is commonly worn by Mirauko, Trogs, etc.
Helmet (Cost: 10 oraks)
This piece of equipment is a valuable
addition to any suit of armour. It is a common belief that fighters never
use their brains and could function perfectly without them. This is not
the case as has been discovered by those foolish enough to enter melee
without a helmet. Enemies have a habit of hitting the one spot which is
not protected and if this happens to be your head, the combat can be over
very quickly. Helmets are fairly cheap and readily available. They do tend
to restrict hearing and vision somewhat so it is usually best for one of
the non-combatant members of your group to go without. This will leave
you with a good chance of spotting ambushes and traps.
Small Shield (Cost: 25 oraks)
This item is about one foot in diameter
and made of wood or leather. It is light, inexpensive and easy to use but
does not provide much protection. Most fighters prefer to use something
larger but it is ideal for thieves or mages.
Local News (Cost: 1 orak)
Town news hawkers have access to all kinds
of trivial local gossip as well as various rumours gained from those arriving
from beyond the town walls. They usually know of any battles which took
place recently in the area and of any strangers currently within the town.
It is always advisable to pay for Local News to get the low down on what
is happening in the world around you.
This is a very small selection of the hundreds
of items available for characters to purchase within the game.
