When the USA were playing in the first World Cup finals in 1930, their trainer had to be carried off on a stretcher. He had rushed onto the pitch to help an injured player, tripped over and broke a bottle of chloroform he was carrying. The fumes knocked him out and stretchermen had to carry him back to the dressing room.
Graham Smith (keeper for Notts County, Colchester, West Brom and Cambridge) had a habit of kicking the goal posts before each game started. One day he did this with Colchester. He went to his right post and kicked it and then went to his left post and kicked it... the crossbar fell down and promptly knocked him out!
Referee Eddie Pringle had the embarrassment of having to book an Irish player during a special match between Airdrie and Ballymena. When he asked the Irish defender his name, he could not understand the answer despite asking him to repeat it several times. In the end, he gave up and handed the player his pencil and notebook and told him to book himself!
Arsenal were playing Paris XI on Christmas Day 1904. They were winning 26 - 0 (yes, 26 - 0) when the Frenchmen brought on a substitute - an englishman called Hodge. When he got his first touch of the ball, the Arsenal players (feeling the Christmas spirit) all stepped aside to let him score.
Once at the legendary Anfield ground, the fog was so thick that the crowd at one end couldn't see what was happening at the other end. Through chants and singing, the fans at each end kept each other informed what was happening.
